Brandeburg vs. Miller – Lake County School Board District 2

School Uniforms

Today’s newsletter is Part 2 of the Lake County School Board District 2 Online Candidate Forum between current School Board members Rosanne Brandeburg and Jim Miller.  Because of redistricting, Brandeburg and Miller will be vying for the same school board seat.

Today’s online forum begins with a topic many feel will be the deciding factor in this race – school uniforms.

Forum Questions and Answers Part 2

Q: School uniforms have been a major topic over the last two years.  What is your position on school uniforms?

    Rosanne Brandeburg

It was important to me to give the business community, the general public, parents, teachers and students an opportunity to respond to the issue of school uniforms. We held three public hearings, one in Eustis, Leesburg and Clermont. If people were unable to attend one of these meetings they could submit an email to the school district. The results showed that of the five choice options, 61% selected the current dress code policy and said to enforce it which is happening throughout our district. I have never been opposed but believe everyone should have an opportunity to respond.

    Jim Miller

I am absolutely for them.  In the last three years with “uniform dress”, Osceola County significantly reduced discipline issues and changed the culture of their schools – especially their high schools.  I suggest uniform dress is a positive way to address our lower quartile issue, who are generally the poor and disenfranchised.  Apparently, besides making them feel safer, uniform dress levels the playing field, raising expectations – theirs and their teachers.  Osceola has the highest rate of free and reduced lunch students (70%) in Florida and has a 70% minority population, yet their 10 high schools received eight As and two Bs.  Check out the results on the attached charts. Q: Who should the school board be listening to when making the decision on uniforms – parents, the public, teachers, administrators, students or a combination?

      Rosanne Brandeburg

A combination of all which has been done.

      Jim Miller

We should have looked at neighboring counties, who have taken the lead, like Osceola and Alachua.  When we vetted the issue in the three regions of the county, at the beginning of each meeting, we should have had a 20 minute presentation from Osceola, who is now in their 4th year.  Flagler County just adopted Osceola’s “uniform dress” last week for the coming school year.  If you look at the attached charts comparing Lake to Osceola, it is an easy decision to make for the benefit of our kids.

Q: How would you rank the performance of the district administration in total?

        Rosanne Brandeburg

The district administration continues to work diligently in areas of need and will not settle until we are an A District.

        Jim Miller

I would currently give us a “B” grade.  Dr. Moxley is an “A” administrator.  It is hard to turn a battleship on a dime.  She is steadily turning us in the right direction.

Q: Should the administrators responsible for authorizing the spending of $169 for hotel rooms in Orlando during the AVID conference been fired?  Why or why not?

          Rosanne Brandeburg

The Superintendent addressed this and the policy was changed by the board.

          Jim Miller

No-People do make mistakes, but if they don’t learn from them, then they get fired.

In tomorrow’s final online forum question-and-answer session, we will ask the candidates about impact fees and local preferences, which are two of the most controversial subjects facing the school district.  Be sure to check your email or visit our website at www.lakecountygov.info to see how these candidates tackle these very important issues.

          1. Mr Riker, welcome to Lake county politics. You been on the alcohol serving end for many years. Please don’t compare these corruptican’s with dogs or any other of Gods animals. When these people are programed to a specific want of their corrupt leaders they keep coming back and coming back until the idiots give them what their masters want them to have! See how they done it in Hitler’s Germany! Rothschilds controling the money! Now Obama has George Soros on hi s blackberry controlling his every move! It is not about we the people it is about they and the money! The local corrupticans already have the Lake School board $562 million in over extended debt. Brandeburg don’t know anything except she followed her hospital medical executive former boyfriend and now husband John up from south Florida and running from his X and his sone and his child support and into this wonderful land of opportunity called the Villages and Lake Dumptser Community College and all it wonder. Jim Miller on the other hand was a high producing comical real estate salesman before the depression while his wife was and nit wit judge turning all the poor and unfortunate criminals aloose and sentencing a few to week end warrior service whith thanks to her friend the la la land sheriff they never really have to serve. All the druggies say is this a great county or what?

You know what is really sad? These nice well meaning people at Romac Lumber has spent their time an money to create this online news media and every time they do their homework and write a really decent well meaning article all they get in return is bloggers telling them how corrupt and rotten Lake County government really is. Especially the sheriff and his antics!

While this is sad it is also apparently 100% truthful. The question should be when in the heqq is someone going to stop this obvious sickness, madness and total corruption in our Lake County government at all levels? Anyone with brains has to know the truth is the truth and in this case the truth needs the attention of all MORAL Lake Countians who intend to stay here.

The million moma organization can call for the firing of “Ellen Deginerate” as an advertisement representative for J. C. Penny just because she is gay and flaunts her lover and gay lifestyle all over the media, then a few decent Lake Countains should have the guts to stand up to one gay sheriff and his culture of corruption and penchant for playing with our young boys! Don’t think this is a secret. everyone in Lake county government darn well knows it and anyone else with one eye and half a brain. this joke needs to be over just like the Obama Joke! If not it will continue to turn into a nightmare!

          2. The issue of school uniforms was dealt with last year. After three well publicized public meetings at three different schools the overwhelming consensus was a vote against uniforms. Issue presented, issue discussed, issue voted on, issue done and over. It’s over for most people but some people act like a dog with a bone, they don’t want to give it up and move on to something worthwhile. This issue was nothing more than a tremendous waste of time for the School Board that should have been use for serious matters. I think commissioner Miller has wasted enough time and should focus on matters he was elected to address as a School Board member. It’s obvious that the rest of the board is ready to do this and I hope he realizes his mistake before he is left behind. He was elected to do a job and bickering over a non-issue such as uniforms is not one of them.

Excellent Forum Format. Easy Access to candidates opinions without having to physically got to a local forum and will get more candid reponse from the public. Please continue to do these for all local elections. This will make it much easier to make a decision on who I would like to vote into office.

So far, I like Jim Miller’s answers to the questions! Very detailed with facts and statistics to back up what he is saying. There was not a lot of political B.S. So far he is a winner in my mind. I am 100% for school uniform dress code and to me it is a no brainer!
